An engine cooling system is designed to circulate a cooling medium (coolant) which absorbs heat from the engine and dissipates it through a heat exchanger (i.e., a radiator or cooler).

One of the primary functions of coolant is to regulate heat within the cylinder head and engine block. Coolant picks up heat and transfers it to the radiator. Coolant is also used to protect against freezing and boiling, and corrosion and pitting of cylinder liners and the engine block. If a problem occurs in the process of dissipating the engine heat, then this is where you would begin to see equipment failure and engine issues, including engine failure. Some problems with the coolant system can include:

  • Excessive corrosion
  • Liner cavitation
  • Total engine failure
  • Head gasket failure, water pump failure, or failure of the radiator and its components‍

There are plenty of practices that our customers can do to maintain their coolant systems and prolong the life of their commercial vehicles. Some of these practices can include:

  • Ensure cooling system is filled with coolant and freeze protection level is adequate
  • Use the same coolant already in the engine for top ups
  • Check radiator fluid levels and concentration
  • Check the integrity of the radiator cap and look for leaks
  • Properly clean and flush the system when coolant is changed
